TURKEY - SYRIA EARTHQUAKE 2023

CONTEXT
On February 6, 2023, a devastating earthquake struck southern Turkey and northern Syria, marking one of the deadliest natural disasters in the region’s history. The initial 7.8-magnitude quake, followed by a powerful 7.5-magnitude aftershock, caused widespread destruction across 11 provinces in Turkey and vast areas of northwest Syria. Entire neighborhoods were reduced to rubble, and millions were left homeless in freezing winter conditions.
HUMANITARIAN INTERVENTIONS
Only in the first month after the emergency, Alpinter supplied over 12.000 tents, 200.000 blankets, 50.000 sleeping bags and large amounts of Shelter Tool Kits and other emergency relief items.

B-FAST EMT-2 FIELD HOSPITAL
B-FAST, coordinated by the Belgian Federal Public Service Foreign Affairs, rapidly mobilized to establish a field hospital in Kirikhan, a city in the severely impacted Hatay province of Turkey. The hospital, encompassing an area of 6,000 square meters (the size of a football field) was fully operational within ten days of the disaster.
The facility was classified as an Emergency Medical Team Type 2 (EMT-2), indicating its capacity to provide comprehensive medical services, including performing critical surgeries, Maternal and Child Health Care and other critical medical interventions
Transition to Local Authorities
On March 9, 2023, after 22 days of operation during which over 3,500 patients were treated, B-FAST officially handed over the field hospital to the Turkish Ministry of Health.

FIELD ASSESSMENT
End of February, a dedicated Alpinter team, with both people from the technical and commercial teams, visited the hit areas of Kirikhan, Kahramanmanas and other impacted areas in and around the epicenter of the earthquake, as well as the EMT-2 Field Hospital
The main objective of the field visit was to understand the use and performance of shelter products supplied in the initial phase of the crisis. This analysis provides input on how Alpinter can enhance the support to the beneficiaries through product improvements for tented accommodation solutions in their current and future crisis-response efforts.
RECONSTRUCTION EFFORTS
Reconstruction in Turkey is progressing, with the government prioritizing rebuilding homes in the hardest-hit regions like Hatay and Kahramanmaraş. While significant strides have been made, challenges such as scale, logistics, and sustainable planning remain. International partners continue to support recovery efforts. Alpinter remains dedicated to contributing to the rebuilding process, providing shelter solutions and expertise to support long-term resilience in affected communities.
